SPOTLIGHT ON PENRITH
The city of Penrith is a major centre of Sydney, situated 50km west of the CBD at the foot of the Blue Mountains. With a population of more than 170,000 people, Penrith has good rail, bus and major road access. The local government area covers 407 square kilometres in total.
Penrith is home to the well known Penrith Panthers Rugby League Club and several other sporting clubs as well as the Penrith Lakes, flooded quarries which are now recreational lakes. The local economy comprises a mix of sports and recreation, tourism and retail and there are a number of new developments and expansions underway in the region.
According to local Elders Principal Linda McVicar, although buyer activity slowed down in the second half of last year it increased significantly in the early part of 2009, particularly in the first home buyer segment. Linda predicts the Penrith property market will continue to be strong due to its proximity to Sydney and relative affordability.
